George Nakashima Woodworker: The Definitive Documentary, Screening and Q&A

  • Delaware River Greenway Partnership (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join us at Washington Crossing Historic Park’s (PA) Visitor Center Auditorium for a screening of “George Nakashima: Woodworker” on November 9th at 2:00 p.m.
George Nakashima is not only a local legend, but a world-renowned woodworker and architect. His New Hope Studio, founded in 1946, is a National Historic Landmark.
Filmmaker John Nakashima’s documentary offers a rare and very personal perspective of George Nakashima and the work that he designed and produced over a period of 54 years. George did not come to woodworking until his mid-thirties after a worldwide search for meaning that lasted for several years during the Great Depression. During his seeker’s journey, he found important answers that brought him to evolve this new approach to woodworking. It is a timeless story for anyone who has a fascination with the creative process.
Following the screening, Mira Nakashima will lead a discussion and Q&A about her father's legacy, the ongoing work at George Nakashima Woodworkers, and the current project to preserve the Nakashima Family Home. To learn more about the preservation efforts and support the campaign, visit: https://nakashimafoundation.org/honor-a-legacy/
Don’t miss this opportunity to share this film and discussion with the diverse group that admires Nakashima’s work, including artists, lovers of mid-century design, woodworkers, and local history buffs. We thank producer and director John Nakashima for sharing this film with our community. This is a free event, but registration is required.

The Weird and Wonderful World of Bats

  • Delaware River Greenway Partnership (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

On October 23rd at 7:30 PM via Zoom, join bat scientist Dr. Alyson Brokaw on a journey into the world of bats—just in time for Bat Week (October 24-31)! From vampires that drink blood to speed racers that can fly almost 100 miles per hour, bats are fascinating and unique creatures. They're also vital to our environment, helping pollinate plants, disperse seeds, and control pesky insect populations. Learn about the bats in our community, threats like white-nose syndrome, and the important role these remarkable flying mammals play in our local ecosystem.

About the Presenter
Dr. Aylson Brokaw is an Assistant Professor in Biology at Cedar Crest College, where she is studying bat ecology and animal foraging behavior. She completed her PhD in the Smotherman lab at Texas A&M University. Dr. Brokaw’s dissertation research focused on understanding how bats use smell while foraging, with an emphasis on the behavioral strategies they use to locate odor sources. She is also broadly interested in animal decision-making, social interactions, and the evolutionary morphology of bats and other mammals.

Fall Field Trip to the Delaware Botanic Gardens!

  • Chesapeake Conservation Landscaping Council (map)

Join us for a guided tour of the Delaware Botanic Gardens, a 37-acre showcase of native plant horticulture and ecological landscaping along the coastal plain. This exclusive tour will highlight the garden’s innovative use of native species in both formal and naturalistic settings. Ideal inspiration for contractors focused on sustainable and habitat-supportive design.

Key features include:

The Piet Oudolf Meadow – A 2-acre matrix of native grasses and perennials designed by world-renowned plantsman Piet Oudolf. In October, expect to see rich fall textures, seed heads, and pollinator-friendly blooms that extend seasonal interest and ecological value.
Woodland Gardens – A 12.5-acre sloped forest with freshwater wetlands, showcasing native ferns, mosses, and understory species that thrive in shaded, moist environments. This area also includes a rare bog habitat supporting endangered native plants.
Pepper Creek Overlook – A tidal wetland habitat along 1,000 feet of shoreline, offering insight into riparian planting strategies and native shoreline stabilization.

The tour will emphasize plant selection, habitat creation, and design strategies relevant to the Delmarva region. Attendees are welcome to stay after the tour to explore the gardens further or network with peers.
